The red colour of a ruby varies within each
deposit. The distribution of colour is often uneven, in stripes and spots.
Chromium provides the red colour and in the case of brownish tones iron is
present in the ruby.
Ruby is the third hardest mineral; however the
hardness varies in different directions. As it is brittle, care must be taken
when cutting the ruby.
Inclusions (minerals, growth structures, canals and other
cavities inside the ruby) are common. They are not always indicative of lower
quality, but are used to identify the source area of the ruby.
Other varieties of gem-quality corundum (of which ruby is a variety) are
called sapphires. The ruby is considered one of the four precious stones,
together with the sapphire, the emerald, and the diamond.
Rubies have historically been mined in Thailand, the Pailin and Samlout
District of Cambodia, Burma, India, Afghanistan and in Pakistan.
The ruby is considered a birth-stone for July and one of
the stones for Tuesday. Ruby is associated with Aries, Leo, Scorpio, and
Capricorn in the zodiac. Ruby is one of the planet stones for Mars and Pluto.
The ruby in crystal healing
Crystal healing practitioners believe that ruby aids in the healing of the
sciatica, varicose veins, and toenails.
The round cut ruby
The round cut ruby is a faceted cut of the ruby gemstone. The faceted cut ruby in the round shape receives its character from the variety of small
planes, or facets, which form the round look.
The ruby, once roughly round shaped is faceted on horizontal grinding wheels.
* Carat - is the unit of mass of gemstones (abbreviated as ct
or cts plural). A carat is equal to 200mg or 0.2g in the metric
system (1ct =200mg). The carat is divisible into one hundred points of
two milligrams each. Sometimes known as the "metric carat". Not to be confused
with karat (or also carat) in relation to gold which refers to the quality and
not the mass.
